Course program
Duration: 6 meetings of 1 hour and 30 minutes each
Meeting 1: Introduction to the subjunctive and its fundamental functions
Objectives: To understand what the subjunctive is and its main functions.
Contents:
• What is the subjunctive?
• When is the subjunctive used?
• Main functions: to express desire, doubt, opinion, emotion,
possibility.
• Practical examples and recognition exercises.
Meeting 2: Tenses and forms of the subjunctive
Objectives: To know the various tenses and forms of the subjunctive mood.
Contents:
• Tenses of the subjunctive: present, past, imperfect, past perfect.
• Verb forms and conjugations.
• Conjugation exercises and recognition of forms.
Meeting 3: Tense agreement and verbs of will, doubt,
feeling
Objectives: Learn how to correctly use the subjunctive tenses in
relation to main clauses.
Contents:
• Tense agreement: rules and examples.
• Verbs of will (to want, to desire), doubt (to doubt, not to be
sure), feeling (to like, to fear).
• Practical application exercises.
Meeting 4: Impersonal expressions, opinion verbs and indirect
interrogative sentences
Objectives: Correctly use the subjunctive with impersonal expressions and
in indirect sentences.
Contents:
• Impersonal expressions that require the subjunctive (è importante
che, è possibile che).
• Verbs of opinion and subjectivity.
• Form indirect interrogative sentences with the subjunctive.
• Activity of transforming direct sentences into indirect sentences.
Meeting 5: Final, concessive, relative sentences and other structures with the
subjunctive
Objectives: To construct complex sentences using the subjunctive.
Contents:
• Final and concessive sentences (perché, affinché, anche se, benché).
• Relative sentences with the subjunctive.
• Other advanced structures and uses of the subjunctive.
• Exercises in constructing and analyzing sentences.
Meeting 6: The conditional period and the independent subjunctive
Objectives: To understand the use of the subjunctive in hypothetical propositions and
how to use it independently.
Contents:
• The conditional period: types and rules of use of the subjunctive.
• The independent subjunctive: uses and differences compared to the
dependent subjunctive.
• General review, practical exercises and tips for daily use
The course will take place on Monday evenings on Zoom at 7 pm (Italian time) starting from September 15th.
